There Top Requirements for Data Protection Software:
Entreprise’s are moving from the traditional CapEx model to OpEx model. As a result enterprise applications are getting migrated to cloud or SaaS solutions.
There is a need for a newer way to protect the environment and enterprises are evaluating newer backup solutions. As per Gartner “By 2021, 50% of organizations will augment or replace their current backup application with another solution, compared to what they deployed at the beginning of 2017”
To avoid many point products enterprise should look for products that can support Data Protection, Copy Data Management and DR use cases.
1. Simplified Backup:-
“By 2022, cloud shift across key enterprise IT markets will increase to 28%” – Gartner
Enterprises are having their assets in both public cloud as well as the private cloud. Hence, multiple point solutions are used for protecting the private and public cloud. User needs a single interface(UI) where they can protect assets in both this environment. A new backup solution should not only support the cloud as a backup target but also should protect cloud-native applications in the cloud. The solution should support a wide set of applications.
The solution should scale, as in cloud the resources grow as there is sudden growth in business.
2. Simple Non Invasive Backup:-
“By 2020, 30% of organizations will have replaced traditional backup applications with storage- or HCIS-native functions for the majority backup workloads, up from 15% today”
With 24/7 business there is an ever-growing data in the Enterprise. Backup windows are shrinking and the solution should be able to provide instant backup without stressing the infrastructure. Pick of a solution that can work with cloud-native and storage capabilities.
3. Instant Recovery
Entreprises cannot afford to have a lengthy downtime. Traditional backup cannot provide RTOs of minutes as they have to bring back the backups to production and reconstruct the data from FULL and Incremental backups. Pick up a solution that can restore large datasets in minutes. The large dataset includes the size of the data as well as the number of objects to restore like VMs, databases.
4. Provide insight into copies of the data created and manage the life cycle of the data
Backup was used for operational recoveries in the past but now they are used for Test&Dev and analytics. Each snapshot in the cloud has a cost, the solution should keep track of these copies.
The solution should be able to create copies at zero cost and it should also keep track of these copies and purge them when not required.
